I deleted documents from a ZIP disk which were automatically deleted from the Recycle Bin.  How can I retrieve the items?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. The Recycle Bin only retains files on local hard drives.  Files deleted on removeable media such as ZIP disks, or network drives, are permanently deleted.

If your ZIP disk is formatted using FAT or another, older, file system, it may be possible to recover the files with a disk utility such as Norton Utilities.  If your ZIP disk uses FAT32, it won't be possible to recover the files.

To check what file system your disk is using, open My Computer, then with the ZIP disk in the drive, right-click and select Properties.  Look for "File System"; it will probably say either FAT or FAT32.
