Checking wether a process is running

I'm trying to write an application (ActiveX EXE) that checks wether a service is running on an NT Server.
I have tried using these API calls:
OpenSCManager, Openservice and ControlService.
Everytime I use the first call it always returns zero. I don't even know if I'm using the right parameters the right calls.

Thanks

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I don't know what language you are using for this, but here is some VB code which will perform a status query on a specified service on a specfied machine.

Place two text boxes on a form, one called txtServer, the other txtService. Add a command button, run the app, enter the machine name and service name (this is the actual service name not the display name, usually the same with spaces etc removed.) Click the button, the status of the service is returned.
