"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

use aumix in the command-line mode
[root@localhost /]# aumix

or indeed, try this first:
chmod 777 /dev/mixer
chmod 777 /dev/dsp
But normally aumix should work.
You can also try closing all applications
that could alreayd use this device by
using fuser as root:
[root@localhost /]# fuser -k /dev/device
for example: fuser -k /dev/dsp
kill's all applications that are using /dev/dsp
