MP3 Player - Security Questions

I would like to purchase an MP3 player.  The small size would be great for jogging and airplanes...

1.  Can a MP3 player record/play tracks off of a CD?

2.  If we can record from CD to MP3 -  what is the best software to use?

3.  Can downloaded/secure  MP3 tracks be recorded on a CD-R in addition to being used on an MP3 player?  Will this continue to be true after the implementation of the secure features announced at COMDEX?

I understand that several suppliers announced at COMDEX the new MP3 security system which is designed to prevent copying...

Thanks,

Not exactly.  MP3 players don't play CDs but your computer might.  If so, the data can be extracted from the cdrom, encoded in MP3 and sent to the MP3 player digitally.  There are many resources for doing this.  Go to www.mp3.com for many details.

2.  If we can record from CD to MP3 -  what is the best software to use?

As above, there are many choices.  Who can say which one is best.  Almost all of them are available for download and free eval.  Some are freeware, others are shareware.

3.  Can downloaded/secure  MP3 tracks be recorded on a CD-R in addition to being used on an MP3 player?

Currently yes.

Will this continue to be true after the implementation of the secure features announced at COMDEX?

Who can say.  This involves predicting the future.  In this case the bad guys are the RIAA fronting the recording studios.  In my opinion, they are fighting a losing battle to save their monopoly.  The genie is already out of the bottle and they will not be able to get it back in.
