My target is to create a simple chat form where there is:
1. a text box to write new message
2. a large text box to show the conversation

AFAIK, the best way to do this is with a Java applet, all the HTML versions i know of refresh the whole page every few seconds to get the latest chat comments

Shivers is correct - it is not possible in html as such.  Html requires that the whole page be sent.  You can not re-write parts of it.

You could make it look like an area was being updated by creating that area as a separate frame and having that frame refreshed regularly, but this will be very poor in terms of performance.

You could even make things a little faster by having a hidden frame that is refreshed regularly and contains very little.  When the main area needs to be refreshed you could send informaion to this hidden frame, being javascript that would cause the real frame to refresh.

You can also have that hidden frame write into the text box by using javascript to access the value of the input field.

Having said all this.  Html is not the way to do this!
