monitor problem

I hope somebody here can help!

I have a Gateway PII 300 w/ 96 megs ram and a 4.8 gig hd w/ Windows 98.

I had a 15 inch Gateway monitor for about a year, then I moved to the Philippines, and didn't bring my monitor with me. Upon arriving here I bought a 17 inch Likom monitor. It worked great, and I didn't have any problems with it at all.

Then a week ago my computer mysteriously crashed. I had to reformat my hard drive and install Windows 98 again. However, now that its up and running, my only Display Settings are for 2 or 16 colors, and I can only use 640x480, a far cry from before with millions of colors and 1024x768. I can't figure it out, or how to get Windows to recognize that my computer can use higher colors, etc, and that my monitor and video board are fine and great, etc...

Any help for this?? It seems my biggest problem is that Likom is probably unheard of, however, if I found the right Gateway driver or whatever, wouldn't that work, since it did before the crash?

Please help!!!!

Color depth and resolution are mostly a function of your video card drivers rather than your monitor. Are the correct video drivers installed? If not, get the latest ones from the card manufacturer. Try deleting the current video drivers from device manager and rebooting to see if the system will install the drivers from the 98 CD
Kevin, if you have the original documentation that came with your Gateway, look at it to discover what graphics adaptor (often called a video card) your computer has. Once you know the identity of the card, then getting the correct driver for it installed is relatively easy. If you can't find the original documentation, then the next best step is to open up the computer and look directly at the graphics adaptor. You can usually figure out what brand and model it is from what is written on the card.

You need the precise identity of the card so you can track down correct driver for the card from the manufacturer's web site. We can help with that once we know what you need.

So come back to us with the full identity of your card (manufacturer and model) and we'll go on from there.

Usualy windows detects what kind of Video card you have, but sometimes it doesn't, try running a "HardWare Detect" in the "Add New HardWare" inside "Control Panel" but i might say that you first have to do what swwelsh say, get the latest version of the drivers, 'cos thats what it gonna ask once detected...
Go to settings for your screen and choose plug and Play monitor. it's probably saying Standard monitor at the moment. Some Monitors are that way. :)
If else - go to settings for your screencard (start - settings - control panel - dbbl click on syustem -> device manager -> screencards -> properties and update drivers and insert your driver cd for your screencard (or floppy or whatever :)

Ok, now I don't know what to do with my points here. I figured out what to do on my own, which was completely different from what suggested, though your suggestions do work, except for a few unique things in my situations. Who do I give the points to here?
You can give the points to whomever you think was most helpful, or you can cancel the question and sit on those points until you have another problem. It's entirely your call. However, it would be considerate if you told us what did solve your problem so we can add it to our big bag of tricks.

Ok, this is what I found out, so whoever you guys decide was closer to it can have em.

I was just looking around then on the Gateway site, and happened upon mention of a Restoration CD. Sure enough, I have one too, and it worked great, installing all my little drivers and all the software that was pre-installed at the factory. Do all companies ship these cds with their pcs? It was great! So now if somebody else has a related problem, tell them to hook up the Restoration CD! Plus I also contacted Tech Support and they said the same thing, in about 4x more words.

What you got from your restoration CD was the video driver you needed to return full functionality to your graphics adaptor.

Not every computer comes with a restoration CD. Generally those are available only from the big manufacturers who crank out tens of thousands of identical units. Those CDs are helpful in returning the computer to the state it was in when it was assembled by the manufacturer. Note that often the individual components (like your graphics adaptor) can benefit from having much more recent drivers installed.

It's your call as to who was most helpful or closest to your ultimate answer.
