asked on

MB using windows drivers

I have an ASUS tx97E mb with a 233MMX processor.  I cant get the busmaster patch to install in win98.  I beleive this is the reason that the MB is using the drivers from Microsoft rather than the ones that came from Asus.  I am not confident that UDMA is working because of this...Anyone have any ideas?  Making it worth alot because I am lost!!!

Adjusted points to 2000
Two suggestions:

1) Delete this question and ask it again with fewer points.  200 pts. for a question like this is more appropriate.  You may need the other 1200 points in the future.

2) When you repost it, provide more details about your problem.  Saying that "I can't get the...to install" doesn't say much.  Are you getting an error, does it crash, what?  Also provide details about the version and source of the drivers you are trying to load, they could be incorrect or out of date drivers.
Please follow jhance's excellent suggestions. I hope the other experts refrain from jumping in here substantively for now until we get more info and fewer points.

The reason I put points was so high was to get quick input, but if you dont want that many, I will lower it.
The Problem...systems is a self built 233MMX (P54C) with an ASUS tx97E mb using the 1.08 bios.  As far as drivers, I am currently using all Microsoft drivers in the device manager/system devices.  I am sure that using drivers from ASUS would enchance the performance of my machine.  The UDMA is the thing I am most concerned with.  Anyway, the cd that came with the mb has a busmaster patch and a PIIX4 fix neither of which will run under win98!!!  I cant seem to figure out how to install the correct drivers.  (Or am I just crazy...are the windows drivers the correct ones?  I really dont think they are!)  My harddisk controlers are also Microsoft drivers, which I know isnt right!!!  PLZ HELP!

ps I am computer literate...you dont have to explain how to get to control panel and stuff like that! :-)
1) The extremely highpoint value creates a very high level of expectation and I'm reluctant to answer since I doubt that I can offer a 2000 point answer.

2) You still haven't said what is wrong with the ASUS drivers.  In the original post you said:

>I cant get the busmaster patch to
>install in win98

Now you say:

>neither of which will run under win98

This is like taking your car to a mechanic and telling them that it doesn't run on the highway.  What does that mean?  Since we cannot take your computer for a drive, the level of help is very dependent on how well _YOU_ explain what is working and not working.  Include the steps you took, the error messages or behavior you found and as many details as possible.

Sometimes the problem is obvious but in this case you just aren't providing enough data.

try changing all of your drivers to ASUS instead of microsoft drivers.
I don't know all of the in's and out's of computers but this seems the likely solution to me, please correct me if I am wrong.

I cant find ASUS drivers to install...that is the biggest problem...The busmaster patch includes some of the drivers  i need, and it wont install in win98...AS far as a problem with my machine, I just dont think it is optimized, and I am trying to tweak it.  I dont have a major problem with it...
thanks
jake
ps. it wont let me drop the points, just add!  Sorry
Please explain _IN DETAIL_ what you mean when you say: "it won't install in Win98"

As I said earlier, delete this question and ask it again at a lower point value.

BTW, you will NEVER get any good help if you don't provide details that can help diagnose your situation!!!!

I will accept that...thanks for helping rather than critizing me!!!  Didnt tell the in's and out's of why it wont work, but none the less, sounds like you are on the right track.
Thanks
jake
Hopefully the answer you accepted is correct and helps you solve the problem.

If not, you just blew a pile of points for nothing.....

We tried, jhance...

Jacobas, can you tell us if you accepted a "theoretical" solution, or an "actual" solution. Did what Siemieniuk tell you actually work for you in this particular case?

He explained something which is more than you attempted to do!  Because I could not find anything on Asus myself or any other newsgroup, I assume the problem was something without a true fix!  Besides, he is competent enough to understand my simple explaination of the problem!
Thanks for trying,
Jake
The Drivers that come with the ASUS CD are the same drivers that Windows 98 supplies you with - only older!

The windows 98 default drivers are the correct drivers, and you have nothing to worry about.

If you check under the 'Hard Disk Controller' branch of your device manager.  You should see "Intel (blah-blah) PCI Busmaster Controller".
