Error message when trying to save

I have a database on a network for multiusers.  If I try to make any changes or add a new field to the table in DESIGN I get the following error message when I try to save.

"Too Many Fields defined"
"Errors were encountered during save operations. Data types were not changed."
I'm a new user of Access. Please Help.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I did the Compact and Repair Database from Database Utilities and it seems to have solved the problem. I went to the design table and modified it and this time it allowed me to save. Thanks for the article and your quick response. This is a great Website!
