cdrom and floppy not valid block devices

Ever since installation, I've never been able to access the floppy or cdrom, I always get the message "not a valid block device" Do they need mounting, or what? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, they need mounting.
mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
