If I display gif images in an application (i.e. no saving, converting, etc, just viewing), do I need to get a license for this? Is there royalties required for only viewing gifs?

basically the software used to create the gif will surely already have the required licience to display gifs.
if after reading the agreements you are still unsure in you particular case weather it is legal or not you should consult a laywer for clarification.

In addition to the information posted by inthe, I suggest you read the following thread from borland.public.delphi.non-technical

In conclusion; There's no definitive answer to your question. My personal opinion is that you don't need a license, but naturally UNISYS disagrees.

P.S. Please don't award me any points for this answer.

Thank you for the info..... kind of the same thing I got out of this... "there is no definite answer".....  :)   I have avoided saving gifs in apps because of this, but I wasn't sure about just displaying them......

There not much difference between viewing GIFs and saving them. Saving GIFs should actually be safe since you don't need to decode the GIFs (and thus use the LZW algorithm) in order to save them.
