finding and installing the cdrom

I have a compaq Persario 4112 with a dead hard drive.  I bought a new one but it is 8gig where the old one was 1.6 gig.  When I try to rebuild the system using the compaq quick restore everything works until I boot off the hard drive then it hangs in msgsrv32.  My guess is that since the new hard disk uses C D E and F that the cd can not be found.  How can I modify the system to see the cd at H instead of E?

You can assign a letter for the CD-Rom in Device Manager.
Is it listed in there?
If not then you must get that problem resolved first.
Go into Device Manager and see if there are any yellow"!" if so list what you have.
Normally win sets your CD attoumatticly to the first free letter so that can't be the problem.
Is your new hdd udma33 / 66 if so try to disable it, somethimes it crashes PC's
Use a bootable diskette with the CD Driver.

Change the statement in the autoexec.bat like this ie:

a:\mscdex.exe /d:<drivername> /L:f

Where /L: is then followed by the drive letter of your choice. Make sure lastdrive in config.sys is = to z
Go to a DOS prompt and edit your Config.sys file.  Be sure that there is a line that states "Lastdrive=z".  Your CD-ROM will automatically be assigned the first drive letter available after your last hard drive.

I had the exact same problem of the exact same compaq model.
Its an easy fix. Update the Rom to the lastest rompaq (SP9847,SP6425)
and the problem is gone. I think that it either fixes and disk size issue
or a Y2K issue.
