Word97 (Russian): How to update dictionary?

Greetings!

I use Word97 (Windows95) to correct my books. However,a lot of words, metaphors, combined words etc are missing even from the large Word97 spellchecking dictionary.

I have an option to add a word to a custom dictionary - but all I add is just a combination of letters: I can't specify what is this a word (noun, verb, etc), what paradigms are its derivatives produced by etc.

Is there a way to update the *main* Word97 dictionary - so I could add a word/proverbs etc in an optimal way? If yes, where could I find a utility to update the dictionary?

Any source of wisdom would be very welcome.

All the best,

Konstantin.

Hi, Konstantin!

As I know, you cannot change the main dictionary in any way without cracking it. What you can do is to create a custom dictionary. This is just usual text file, so you can add your words in any text editor. Remember, you have to add all forms of any word, plurals, in capital letters and so on. Probably you may insert also phrases.

PS. It would be nice if I'd wrong...

Yuri,

The custom dictionary won't do, since it dosn't regard the new words in the same way as the main one does.

I need either the confirmed proof that the main dictionary can NOT be updated in any way (which means I become even more displeased with Office97) or the way to add directly toit. By any means.

All the best,

Konstantin.
I think yuk99 is correct, you can not edit a main dictionary, did not find a thing in the MSKB (*). Can not think hacking it would be worth the effort, I doubt you could _add_ something, only distort entries using an hex editor...

Despite you not being interested in the custom.dic:

cri,

Thanks for your comment. I have also browsed the MS sources of wisodm; however, I will wait a bit longer.

The alternate way is to ask, Is there another Russian spellcheking CAD with possibility to update the dictionary on the fly?

The detailed answer to the last question can be regarded as the solution of the original problem.

All the best,

Konstantin.

Do you mean CAD (Computer Aided Design) or a wordprocessor ?

Perhaps WordStar is an alternative. Will look it up and also see if there are alternative dictionairies for Word. Which areas, besides an user being able to update them, should they cover especially well ?

In the meanwhile, have a look into this link:

cri,

I meant a wordprocessor... sorry for wrong abbreviation used.

The spellchecker should be able to work with Russian texts and allow the user to expand the dictionary. On the fly or by means of a separate utility - it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the link... navigating it now...

cri,

Thanks for the references you've mentioned. They are valuable, and I suppose they could be regarded as the answer to the original question.

Thank you!

All the best,

Konstantin.

Konstantin, thanks.
