how do i send a value through a hyperlink that can be deciphered by a perl program?

i know its something like
<a href="http://blah:8080/cgi-bin/test.cgi?query_string=hello">send hello to test.cgi</a>

and then i can do something like
print "$ENV{QUERY_STRING} paul" in my perl program and it will say hello paul

Short example for your problem

if ($ENV{'QUERY_STRING'}) {                        
 @para = split(/&/ , $ENV{'QUERY_STRING'}) ;}

print $para[0];
