PAP login failure for <username>

I'm trying to setup AutoPPP on COL 2.2.5.  Every time I try dialing in from Win 9x I get /var/log/secure shows "PAP login failure for <username>."  I've got /etc/ppp/pap-secrets set to:
*  *  ""  *
and /etc/ppp/options set to all the other setting recommended in the HOW-TO's, including "login"

The <username> is a viable user in /etc/passwd and I can initiate a PPP session Linux, to Linux, by using an explicit PPP login, but I can't make AutoPPP work.

HELP!

Thanks . . .

Could this be a PAM problem? Are you using PAM?

Uuuh . . . I don't know . . . How do I find out?

In /var/log/secure, in the log sequence regarding the failed PAP login failure, just before that event there are two lines:

PAM-warn[12674]: service: ppp [on terminal: /dev/ttyS1]
PAM-warn[12674]: user: (uid=0) -> <username> [remote: ?nob
ody@?nowhere]

Does that have anything to do with it?

Please advise . . .

Thanks!

PAP login failure is usually caused by wrong passwords. Could you make sure you're typing the right password in the 95? Don't forget that passwords are case sensitive...

Incidentally, what distribution of Linux are you using?

RE:  Correct Password . . .

I did check that . . . about a thousand times!

RE:  Linux Distribution . . .

COL 2.2.5 means Caldera OpenLinux 2.2.5, which corresponds very closely, to within a patch of that version of the public Linux kernel.

Thank You . . .

P.S.  I hope you can excuse my sarcastic expressions of frustration.  You must know what it’s like to have tried everything you can possibly research and still be wrong.  Regardless of how crass an exterior I my display, I am deeply appreciative of all the help provided by all The Experts and I am extremely grateful for this forum . . . really . . . thanks . . .

Frustration is part of the life of people that deal with solutions.

 Are you trying mgetty, by the way? Did you compile it with the AutoPPP support?

 You also need the following line in the /usr/local/etc/mgett*/login.config file:

/AutoPPP/ -     -     /etc/ppp/ppplogin

 I hope this can help...

YES!  THANK YOU!  VERY MUCH!

/AutoPPP/ -     -     /etc/ppp/ppplogin

Was THE answer!

I sware I did not see that suggestion ANYWHERE and ANY of the newsgroup archives, or HOW-TO's anywhere.

Thanks Again!

Man, it was damn hard to find about that sometime ago when I was in the same situation as you... Somebody once gave me an URL that pointed to a website with the complete ¨cake receipt¨ for mgetty. Unfortunatelly I missed the URL so I thought I could just look around my config files to see if I could give you any relevant tips...

 Well, Merry X-Mas and happy New Year!! :)
