g++ compilation...

A question from a C++ newbie.Here is what I have done...
OS: Unix (SunOS5.6)
register.h   //header
register.cpp //implementation
main.cpp     //main program

Compiled:
g++ -c main.cpp
got the main.o file
when try to execute the main.o file I get the error message:
main.o: Exec format error. Binary file not executable.

I have no clue what causes this at this point. Do you have any idea?
Thanks for your help...
