When you "set DISPLAY", this means "draw on the specified
display". But if this was the only step, anyone could
draw on anyone else's display. So you must have permission to draw on someone else's screen.

So try this:

In a window ON THE MACHINE WHERE YOU WANT TO DRAW,
(the one that is giving permission)
enter "xhost +" (+ means everyone has permission
to draw on your screen. You can restrict to just a
single or a few machines if you want.)
