Outlook Express 5 and Spell checking

After upgrading to IE 5.01 my spell checking in Outlook Express 5 will only work in French and Spanish.  I go to options/spelling and change it to anything other than these and it defaults back to French.  I've tried installing over the original version and removing and re installing OE5 with no luck.  In the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\proof directory it looks like all the proper spelling files are there...

Um.. I don't know if this is a silly question or not, but you do actually have the English version don't you?

Are you selecting "Apply" before exiting the options menu?

I had the english version before I upgraded to IE 5.01. It shouldn't have changed.

Yes I am hitting apply after I try to change it to english.

Thanks,

GDPR? That's a regulation for the European Union. But, if you collect data from customers or employees within the EU, then you need to know about GDPR and make sure your organization is compliant by May 2018. Check out our preparation checklist to make sure you're on track today!

Mmmm.  Very strange indeed.  Is the update you have a downloaded version, or is it the version M$ sends out on CD-ROM?  If it is the downloaded version, can you just download the OE stuff again just to be sure that you have the English version?

Cheers,

Stu.

It's the downloded version from the Windows update site. I've tried reinstalling it and also removing OE 5 and then installing it from scratch.  Nothing seems to work...

You need to reinstall Microsoft Word which is where the spelling files are grabbed from.  If you're using IE5 w/o Microsoft Word installed, you need to uninstall ALL of IE5, not just OE, then reinstall the whole thing from scratch.

Word is working fine with no problems. It has it's own spell checking which has nothing to do with OE 5.  All other Programs with spell checkers work fine.

The problems started when I upgraded from IE5 to IE5.01

Word should be working fine; but you should reinstall it anyway.  This happened to me.  bah, whatever ;)

Why post that as an answer?  mcqahee has already said that Word is working fine!  Outlook Express and Word do not share a common dictionary.

Word WOULD be working fine-- but my point is that OE5's checker doesn't know where the Word checker is.

What about the system next too me which has OE 5 on it, but no copy of Word?  It still performs a Spell Check perfectly!

Problem fixed.

The answer was in the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\Spelling\1033\Normal

Engine
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF\MSSP232.DLL

Dictionary
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF\mssp2_en.lex

These were pointing to the wrong files in the wrong folder 1036 instead of 1033.

Also the mssp232.dll was missing.  I'm running Office 2000 premium which uses a different spellcheck dll.  I had to pull this dll of the Office 97 cd.

Thanks all,

Mike
