asked on

indicated modem speed

Until I upgraded to Netecape Communicator 4.7, whenever I paused my mouse on the blinking connected computers in the tray, it reported what I believed to be an actual modem speed.  Now, it always says 57600, which is the setting I have for the modem.  How can I restore the actual speed?

get TweakDUN, and play with it
Go to your modem manufacturers web site and you will most likely find an extra string you can add to your modem properties. I had the same type problem with my Diamondmm modem. Go to control panel, open modem properties go to the connection tab click advanced and you will see a box to add the extra string.
To get the actual speed if the above suggestions don't work for you...

Click Start>Run.  Type COMMAND and press OK.

It should say "C:\>".  Type PING [isp domain] where [isp domain] is the end of your email address (IE if you're screenname@mail.prodigy.com you would type prodigy.com).

You will get back:

Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: bytes=32 time=120ms
Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: bytes=32 time=111ms
Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: bytes=32 time=110ms
Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: bytes=32 time=100ms

Find where it says time = yyyms.  Pick the lowest one (in this case, 100).  Type "EXIT" and press enter.  The window should go away.

Now, click START>RUN and then type CALC and press okay.  Calculator will start.  Type 56.6, then click "divided by" (looks like a "/"), then type the number you got.  Then, multiply your answer by 100 and you get the speed at which you are connected.  In this case, I'm connected at exactly 56.6k (my isp is so damned cool).

hope this helps.

Mindblade's answer, the easiest, was correct.  I had recently had my computer worked on, and the cable from the board to the port was replaced, and it screwed up the recognition of the modem.  Afterwards, I did a manual hardware P&P search, and it found the correct driver.  All is well.

Thanks to all who answered, despite the fact that I had no need or opportunity to try out the other responses.  Appreciate all the help.
