Win95 to Win98 ver1

I forgot, but can one install Win98 rev1, over Win98. I like clean installations when it comes to windows. In Other words, save the data and reformat the disk. I have a client that asked that question today. I will probably do it this Wednesday.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you delete io.sys, msdos, rename win.com to win.xxx, you can install any version of windows.  You might have to reinstall some software because the dlls in the system folder might disappear, but most don't.  You also might have to re-register some apps as the registry keys will disappear but all the data will remain intact.  Just make sure that when setup wants you to install in directory windows.000 you chose "other" and force the install in the windows directory.

The PC does not have a directory MSDOS. I assume the hidden file.

Yep, io.sys and msdos.sys at the root.  You can actually do it without deleting these, but you will likely get a version conflict report on th POST.

Great: I will change the endings, just for to ease my anxiety. And then instll over the original windows 95 directory windows 98.

I love this site. Learned alot and helped some people. Somehow since there is immediate feedback, one's interest increases. I have three in the house, having Attention deficit disorder under control, I can easily work with two computers and read a book at the same time. Fortunatelly ADD, has the ability of giving one a high IQ, but also gives on the need to get it under control.

If you really want to go whole hog, make a boot disk and add deltree.exe from c:\windows\command.  Then you clean out the autoexec, config, io, msdos files from the root.  Reboot from the disk and type deltree c:\windows.  This will completely eliminate windows from the machine.  You will have a harddrive with a lot of files and no operating system.  Then install whatever version of windows you wish. THe advantage is you will have a clean install of windows with no leftover junk.  The disadvantage is you WILL have to reinstall most apps and hardware drivers.

The other way or fenaming is simpler, I would not like to charge the client monies for basically sitting around and reinstalling his programs.
