They are called system tray icons, and different programs put icons there.  Most of the icons there indicate an application that is running, and cannot be removed unless the program is closed.  For example, as long as ICQ is running, an icon appears in the system tray.  To remove the icon, you need to exit the program.

Some apps start at login and put an icon there to show you they are running.  A good example of it is Norton AntiVirus.

I've only seen a handful of programs that have an option *not* to display an icon in the system tray.  When you run the program, usually under options, you should see something that says "show icon in system tray".  But the vast majority of those icons cannot be removed without stopping the associated program.

You can double click on any of them (or sometimes right click) to find out some options.  If you list specific apps I can help you more.

You can disable some of those icons through removing it from startup folder.
To go to startup folder on start button press right button of your mouse and click on open. select programs under programs folder therewill be startup open it and delete all the unwanted items from that. Some of the icons visilble in the task bar won't be available there for that you can double click on that icon from task bar and there will be option to close that or to disable that. If any further clarification is required please infom.
