I have Linux-Mandrake 6.0 and need to configure my modem to allow me to connect to my ISP.  I have a 3Com/U.S. Robotics
56K modem.  How do I go about setting it up.  I am running a duel boot system with windows 98.

If this is an external modem, just use the control panel / linuxconf and set it up. (networking/client/ppp) just enter which port it is on (ttyS0 = com1 etcetc) enter phone, user and pass and you are done.

If this is an internal PnP modem, you first have to use isapnptools and setserial to configure the modem.

If this is a "winmodem" you cannot use it at all.

It should be installed by default? If not there is a isapnptools rpm on the CD.

(or you could upgrader to 6.1, which has Kudzu whh tries to config pnp hardware automatically.)

I have a very similar modem. The way I connected to the internet was through KPPP. Open it and start setting your configuration using the "tabs". One is the modem setup and it will allow you to pick the "comm" although it is different than MSWindows. I'm not using my linux at the moment but if I remember after selecting there is an step to query the modem or it is automatic.

I did not get any automatic installs either.
