OUT OF HUNK memory

When ever I play MS-DOS sierra games like quest for glory or kings quest.  Every 20-30 minutes DOS will become a window and say in text "OUT OF HUNK!"  If there is anywhere or anyone who can get me more HUNK I will give them 150 points.

As you might kno wHUNK is a tpye of memory in old computers. But nowadays not even my cyrix 486 100 has enough HUNK.  computers like DELL PENTIUMS have almost no HUNK.

I have heard of the the "out of handles" problem
this is a config setting.
go into your config.sys and look for a setting:
files=40
or
buffer=40

increase those numbers and it should take care of the "out of handles" problem

Are you playing these games in DOS or in a Windows shell?

actually with the files and buffers settings, you should actually only have about files=30 UNLESS you are running Windows (3.1 or 9x), in which case you should have files=50 at least

Freeing up files frees up extra xms which should solve some problems

Also, games that were after KQ4 will probably need at least a Pentium to run properly anyway, as all Sierra games seem to have gotten lots better after kq4.

Hi KornKobMan,

I think "Out of Hunk" error message comes when you run out of conventional memory.

Try to free conventional memory. To to this ensure that DOS loads into upper memory and remove any tsr program not needed by the game (such as doskey, keyb) from your config.sys and autoexec.bat. When you have near 600K free, Sierra's (and many other) old games should work better.

You should have these lines in you config.sys:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE /NOEMS
DOS=HIGH,UMB

You can also create a boot disk with memory optimized startup files and start your computer with it when you're going to play Sierra's old games.

Good luck!
