Word 97 ClipArt

I have upgraded my Pentium II 233 computer from Windows 95
to Windows 98SE. My problem is that I now can't access my clipart on my Word 97 disk for some reason. When I put the disk in it opens up to where I can install the different programs on the disk, but I can't get at the clipart. I also had installed Office 97 awhile back, but I didn't notice it at that time.
What do you think is wrong, and what should it do?

dimpledr,

First and foremost, in order to use Office 97 with Windows 98 (any version of Win98) you will need to download and install both Service Release, SR1 and SR2. These can be found on the Microsoft Office Update site. They are large downloads, but they do fix the majority of problems.

Next, recheck to make sure that you have installed the clipart index as part of the overall installation.

Finish the updates and then we can go further if need be.

I checked my Word 97 and it is Word 97 SR-2. I believe that I updated that some time ago. What's next?

Thanks

Okay, next Step:

1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. Then,
   double-click Add/Remove Programs.

2. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office. Then, click
   Add/Remove.

3. In the Microsoft Office Setup dialog box, click Add/Remove.

4. Select Office Tools, and click Change Option.

5. Clear the Clip Art (or Popular Clipart) check box.

6. Click OK.

7. Click Continue.

8. After Setup is done, delete ArtGalry.cag. This file is usually in your
   Windows folder.

9. Repeat steps 1-4.

10. Select the Clip Art (or Popular Clipart) check box.

When I get to step 3. and click on the Add/Remove I get this message: Insert Microsoft Office 97 Professional CD 1.
After I insert the CD microsoft Office 97 Professional comes up from the running CD.
I then get this message: System Monitor
Norton System Monitor has detected the following program.
C:\~MSSETUP.T\~msstfof.t\acmsetup.EXE

I then go through steps 4.-8
When I repeat steps 1-4 as step 9. says I get the same message at step 3.
I continue with steps 10.-12 and then reboot the computer.

I still can not access the Clipart that is on the Word 97 installation disk. Do you think that I have to reinstall Word 97 from this disk in order for it to read the clipart on it?
what did I do wrong?

Okay, I see what's happening, although I'm not sure there is a way around it. Disable Norton entirely.

As an example, use your Ctrl, Alt and Del keys and open the Close Programs dialogue box. Now "end task" for everything there, including Norton, except for Systray and Explorer. Now repeat the install process.

I did as you suggested above, and I didn't get any trouble from Norton, but it asked for the Microsoft Office 97 Professional CD again. I did all the steps that you mentioned above, but it still doesn't run the Word 97 CD with the clipart on it. Any other thoughts?

You did disable norton completely, correct? You just may have to reinstall Office 97 to accomplish this. But let's make sure there's nothing wrong with the PC first. When you try and access the clipart directory, let's say through My Computer or via Windows Explorer, does it bring up an error?

I did have Norton disabled for sure. I put the CD for Word 97 that also has the clip art on it and going into Explorer I can bring up the Clipart that is on the CD. It brings them up by their types, and if I open up one of those and click on a clipart name, it will open up the picture. So the Clipart and the computer are working I guess. The thing is that I use to be able to just insert the Word 97 CD while working in Work 97 and select - Insert-Picture-Clipart and the clipart that is on the CD would be included with my other Clipart. As soon as I would select clipart the CD would start running, I assume adding the clipart into my selection in Word 97. Right now I just get the clipart that is in Word 97 and nothing from the CD. I hope this helps you with my problem.

I think this is more of a Office 97 issue than Win98, so lets look at that angle for a bit. When you go to insert clip art, does word allow you to obtain clipart from an alternative source so that you can point to the specific directory on the CD?

When you install Office 97 and the clipart add-on, an entry is inserted in the registry that points to that directory under certain circumstances, such as the use of word and the insertion of a clipart image. For some reason this link is now broken.

With the Word 97 CD in I can get tp the Clipart by Choosing: Insert-Picture-Insert From File". I than have a choice of using Backgound, Bullets, Lines, shortcut to Office CD, and shorcut to Word CD. When I choose Word CD the clipart on the Word 97 disk comes up in a window showing all the different names of different clipart and by choosing one, the picture of it comes up in the window to the right. I can then choose to insert if I want. Everytime that I insert the Word 97 CD in the computer it starts up as if I am going to install one of the programs on it. I close this and then proceed as above. My clipart on the CD use to come up in the Clipart selection in Word 97 if the CD was in place along with the clipart that is already there. I hope that I haven't confused you too much with this explaination. What can I do to get it to open like it did before. At least I now can get at it, but it isn't as easy as before.

Jerry, as an after thought, how about going into the clipart section on the CD and see of there is a setup.exe file. If there is, run and and setup your clipart part of the install again.

I did as you suggested and and ran the setup.exe in the clipart section of my CD. I now have all my clipart on my hard drive. When I now open up clipart it is all there and I don't have to use the CD in order to use it. By loading all this clipart onto my hard drive, it won't affect my computers preformance will it? I still have just about 4 gigs of space left on my hard drive so space is not an issue.

No it won't Jerry as long as you do your normal maintenance such as scandisk and defrag, which you should do anyway. Office 97 should have flagged when you executed setup, giving you a choice of whether to run from the CD or the Hard drive. Now I know for certain something changed in the registry to cause this. Just keep an eye on your pc and how the programs perform to see if there are any other strange changes.
