Linux Dial-Up Server

I know this is a stupid question, but hey, I'm a newbie to Linux! I know there is a way that you can dial into your linux system from another computer and get the linux prompt, I think it's called a shell account. How do I go about doing this?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Well you need to read HOWTO on PPP at www.linux.org
You will need to use mgetty and edit few files in /etc/mgetty and add line in inittab
/sbin/mgetty /dev/modem

You dont need ppp .. if u need only a shell prompt ..
get mgetty installed in ur machine  to which u want to dial into .... then add a regular user there with shell as /bin/sh or /bin/bash . then u can login into that .through dial up ..    u have to modify the mgetty/config file as per ur machine configuration ..

Hopefully you will have had more luck finding mgetty by now - personally I find Freshmeat(http://www.freshmeat.net/ ) to be an excellent source of Linux info.

As for mgetty, you can find it at http://alpha.greenie.net/mgetty/

Hope this does what you want.

I'm sorry I didn't join E-E sooner - because I know between 98SE & mgetty (despite the fact mgetty is fiddlier in the initial stages), it is by far the better option for remote logins - and can also be used, if you had wanted, to trigger a PPP connection for you to your box as well.
