Mixing audio using the mixerXXX-functions (Win32API)

I know there are mixer-functions to control input and output audiolines.

I want to fade down the volume of a waveplaying program (ie. RealPlayer) and mix this with wavesound from my own program in my own volume setting, and finally fade up the volume of the other waveplaying program.
Is this possible using the mixer-functions? Is this possible at all?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can use the Audio Mixer functions to change the volume. However, you can't mix it with your own wave audio. The player owns the audio device exclusively. You can use DirectSound to mix your own wave audio files.
