PREVIEW JPG, JPEG, GIF, and other picture files

I can no more see the preview of picture files on the left side of the open folders, except for BMP and HTML Doc files, although I have checked the folders to be viewed as webpages. How can I make the necessary association? What is the program that executes the thumbnail previews? How can I make that program (in Windows?)recognize these other file types, or even types other than picture files? Thanks

Or perhaps the other way around: how can I make these file types to be marked in such a way as the previewer can recognize them? Thanks again.
To fix this:
Click Start > Run, and type the following command in the Open box:
regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll - If you have Internet Explorer 4 installed
regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll - If you have Internet Explorer 5 installed
Then hit enter
Dear rayt333;
I immediately tried your suggestion. A dialogue box appeared, saying  "DllRegisterserver and DllInstall in shdoc401.dll succeeded." Then I checked one of my picture folders. Only the BMP generated a thumbnil preview. Where do you think I have gone wrong? (By the way, this problem started after I installed and removed a freeware, XNView. It automatically assumed itself the default program for picture files, when I opted for its association. I still have it on the computer, but it doesn't have any associations. It didn't have automatic uninstall, and I had to delete its files. Then, I had to reassociate the jpeg and gif back to the way they were, which apparently, hasn't completely happened. Thanks for your time.)

Dear Pasci;
     Thank you very much for your indeed very detailed and sophisticated answer. It was quite successful. You can imagine how happy I am. I also edited the .gif with the same values and it worked for it too. Does it apply to any type of picture files?
      By the way, this is my first time asking for help on this site. I wish to post a grade for you (actually 250), but the page doesn't ask me. How can I do this?
       I wish you the best. Happy Holidays to you...
