Begining Visual Source Safe 6 with VB6 SP3

I have to share a project between programmers and the only software that i know it could help me is Visual Source Safe. So, i started to learn about it. I installed it at my server and on the clients throught the netsetup in the server.
I configured them and create an example project. For accessing the same file i disabled the 'allow multiple checkouts' and didn't have any problem with check in and out forms, modules, etc...
So here we go:
1 - The resource editor on the menu got crazy and send an error every time i inicialize the VB and creates another shortcut for it on the menu. Thats a little problem
2 - I have VB5 on a machine, i just wanted to know why it made that question at the begining of the server installation for the compatibility between vb5 and 6 databases, because when i open the projet at 5 it got me a GPF and closes everything.
3 - when i want to add a file, i check out the vbp and add the file. When i save the file, another GPF, if i check in the project, it just deletes it from the original location, so i have to open the VSS and go to GET LAST VERSION, this is really a problem.
I don't know if this is a bug or i'm not using it correctly. if there is anyone who uses it please advise me and i could offer more points.
i need some suport on getting it to work
or an advise for another way of multiple programmers

I'll Start at the end cause its an easy one.

3) Goto Tools\Options Menu
On Local Files Tab ensure the
"Remove Local files on Add or Checkin" option is unchecked. This should stop VSS deleting your local files.

2) The Question was actually between SourceSafe 5 and SourceSafe 6 database types. SourceSafe 5.0 Clients cannot access SourceSafe 6.0 databases, so Microsoft provided and option to retain a version 5.0 style database structure.

As for why VB5 GPF's which version, I dont know.

1) NO Idea

Well, first of all, NEVER allow multiple checkouts! It destroys the whole meaning of source code. It means that more than one developer can work on the same code.

About the other problems: If you use VB5, you must install the VSS with the backward compatability to version 5, otherwise you'll have many problems with VB5 clients (like GPFs etc.). The new VSS database format does not match the VB5 format.

About the new shortcuts etc.: Working with VB5 we've discoverd that working with long filenames and paths causes problems with VSS, it can sometimes look for "My documents" and sometimes look for "mydocu~1". Microsoft claim that they've fixed the bug in VB6 and VSS6, but it happened to me in these version too. Use standard 8.3 filenames.

3) That's really great Gordonp, i didn't realize it was so simple to stop the VSS of deleting my files, i just don't know why is desabled this option from VB, but i changed it in VSS. Do you know why? PS: post as an answer, so you can grant the points.

2) Did you see the other answer, yronnen? I don't know what is right, because i installed with the backward compatability and i got GPF at VB5 !!! And i already disabled allow multiple checkouts, if you read my question.

About the shortcut, we are talking about different problems. For your problem you have to look at tools/options at windows explorer at file tabs (don't know the name, my windows is in Portuguese) and loof for Visual Basic Project, Edit, select OPEN, Edit, put double quotes at the VB shortcut and space and double quotes at %1 (note that you have 4 double quotes) that will solve your problem.

Mine is for the shortcut at the menu, i open the tools and i see more than one Resource Editor, i know i can fix with customize, but every time i open VB with a project at source safe, it creates one more, and the last time it made a mess on my toolbar too.

Heres an answer to claim some points for part 3.

As for the Resource Editor, its possible that the editor tries to access the Project File when its loaded, then if the project file is read-only (Checked  IN) it causes an error. Try checking out the project file before you open VB.

See if this helps.

Also, if your not using The Resource Editor then use the Add-In manager and set it so it doesnt load the Resource Manager every time.
