monitor display

I was working  in Appleworks spreadsheet program.  I would highlight the columns and some letters would change to a gray
display.  What is happening to the display? Thanks

Hi, oncy.

To comment more would require you to give more particulars about your computer and monitor.

If your monitor can display thousands of colors, you might want to try that setting to see if this helps. Also, make sure that the screen resolution setting in the Monitors (or Monitors & Sound) control panel is compatible with whatever monitor you are using.

The Mac OS highlight setting may also be a culprit. From the Appearance control panel (Mac OS 8.5 and later) you can change the highlight color to something other than, say, the gray that might be interfering, or anotther color that doesn't cause another color to appear on the characters selected.

Another thing, are you using a standard theme, such as platinum in 8.5. Or a third party theme?
What versions: MacOS, Appleworks.

Appleworks 5.0.4 is the latest (only required for MacOS 9).

Software updates can be found at:

This is a bug. We cannot reprogram Appleworks and/or the MacOS to fix it. It is a rather minor thing and may never be fixed by the vendor.

Good Luck,
