Partition Magic 5 pro

after upgrading from partitiom magic 4 to 5, i am now now longer work with my 20gb disk that has 3 partitions, made by pm4. i can still use this disk, but can not see it in pm5. i have tryed to reinstall pm4, but the same problem came up. i have not changed anything on computer as far a new hardware or software. i also installed drive image 3, and it too cannot see my second disk.

the first disk in a 851 mb disk as a primary master.
the second disk is a 20000mb disk as a prmary slave. it has 3 partitons.
i am running a win98se installation.

Sash, you need to remove PM4 completely, including its files and subdirectories and then run scanre/fix from the command line. Boot to a command prompt only (F8 key at boot), change directories to \windows\command
and then scanreg/fix <enter>.

When done, boot into windows and then install PM5.

NOTE: Before doing this, did you download and install the PM4 updates from prowerquest?

Frankly I'm not sure as none of the techs I deal with have had this problem, so it may be because the update wasn't applied or???

Okay, before trying something more drastic, when you tried to view the partition in version 5, were there any errors of any kind?

Sash, before we go any further, I'd rather not risk any of your data unless there are no other alternatives. How about an email to PowerQuest or a phone call. I'm concerned about that partition of you can't see it in either.

I really wouln't try anything until I knew why that partition wasn't being seen properly. Have you tried to boot to the Win98 boot disk and then run Fdisk to see if you can see the partition(s)?

sash031299Author Commented:
no, but windows can see, read and write to the partitions. anyways, thanks for your help.

That's easy Sash.

First, let's understand what you are seeing. When Windows starts, it uses its own interface, which is not dos dependent. Partition Magic, on the other hand, is dos dependent, taking its information strictly from the Bios during startup. Windows will use any drive on which it can find the FAT, while PM needs the first sector of the drive as well as the FAT.

By making the changes you made, you enabled PM to see the first sector and therefore the entire drive became visable.

thats what tiped me off ot change the disk config. one thing i don't get is why it worked before?? PM4 could see the second disk before in the old config. i did however have win2000 on the computer when i first installed PM4. funny thing but, when i installed my new disk, i could only see 9GB of the disk (after makeing 2 partitions). then when i installed win2000, the rest of the disk was usable. now win98se can see it all. this i can not explane, can you??

the points are yours, just try to tell me why this happend :)

Sash, you've added a whole bunch of new factors here and mixed them in with what we discussed. I can only guess as to the effects of Win2K on your system, as Win2K is able to handle FAT a6 and 32, as well as NTFS and the new AD formatting.

If done correctly, when you installed Win2K, you should have been able to see anything up to 2 terrabytes, the same as in Win98/Fat 32. The new NTFS can see 2 terrabytes X 1000.

But the factors I was referring to is how these bios issues are handled. Win2K can actually manuever the bios if the bios allows it, meaning that if a setting is incorrect, Win2K will attempt to make a permitted change. So, its very possible that this figures into this mix somewhere as well.

In the very near future, bios's will be handled directly through the operating system very much like the Abit soft bios.
