I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Is this a 3300? If so, go to the website and download the 2117 error patch. Here is the URL:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/scanners/software/sj509mu.exe.html

It also has the instructions for installing the patch. Make sure to reboot the computer after you are finished.

If that does not resolve the issue,
call HP at 1-900-555-0012 and discuss it with them. This will be a hardware issue and they will not charge you for the call. They will refer you to the service department.

Good Luck!

The Error patch was already installed. The answer is merely a repeat to
to a previous users query about error 2117 and does not acknowledge that the patch was already installed.

In correct assumption. Did you not read the bottom part about this being a hardware problem and needing to call HP and have the scanner serviced? Apparently not. Perhaps next time you might finish reading answer as I or someone else posts one. It can save you time and futility.

The hardware issue is the correct assumption for builds prior to June of 1999. I appreciate your time.

Here is something to try for the 2117 error.

ISSUE: When choosing Accept in HP PrecisionScan or opening HP PrecisionScan LT, the error "Unidentified Program Error 2117" occurs.
SOLUTION: Rename the file CTL3D32.DLL and reinstall the HP Scanning Software.
1. From the Windows Desktop, select Start, Find, and Files or Folders.
2. Type CTL3D32.DLL in the Named box and select Find Now.
3. When the file appears, right-mouse click it, select Rename, type CTL3D32.OLD, and then select Enter.
4. Reinstall the HP Scanning Software.
5. Shut down the computer, cycle the power on the scanner, and turn the PC back on. The error should no longer occur.
SUMMARY: This error occurs because v 2.31 of CTL3D32.DLL exists on the system. Version 2.31 is the Windows NT version. By renaming the file and reinstalling, v 2.29, which is the Windows 95 version, is installed.

The HP ScanJet 3300C scanner ships with HP PrecisionScan LT 3.0c. To verify which version the customer is using:
1. Open PrecisionScan LT
2. Choose the Help menu About HP PrecisionScan LT
3. In the About HP PrecisionScan LT window, version 3.0c should show
If this is true, you now need to verify the version of the file, hp3300t.dll:
1. Choose Start, Find, Files and Folders
2. In the Named Field type hp3300t.dll
3. Right-click the file, choose Properties
4. Choose the Version tab at the top of the Properties window
5. If the version is 5.3.99.0, it is the original version that came with the scanner.
6. The customer will need to download the patch, SJ509.EXE, from the HP ScanJet Web site. Power-cycle the scanner and reboot the computer and try to scan again.
Once the customer runs the patch, the version of the hp3300t.dll will be version 6.8.99.0
Try this

ISSUE 1: Earlier HP ScanJet 3300C scanners, built prior to 4 June 1999, have problems with the scanner initializing at start-up or when first powered on. The error message may display "Scanner can not be initialized" or "Scanner could not be found."

SOLUTION 1: Check the Date Code in the serial number to find the manufacturing date.
NOTE: This scanner would need to be serviced if it was manufactured before 4 June 1999.
The serial numbers you will be looking for are:
· MY96Dxxxxx or less. (The significant numbers are in the fourth and fifth positions.)
_ The third digit = the year (for example, 9 = 1999)
_ The fourth digit = the month (for example, 5 = May; 6 = June)
_ The fifth digit = the day (days 1 through 9 are numeric; days 10 through 31 are alphabetic) (for example, 1 = first day of the month, 5 = fifth day; A = tenth day, B = eleventh day)
ISSUE 2: The scanner and software will install correctly and appear in the Device Manager. When attempting to scan, an "Undefined Program Error 2117" occurs.
SOLUTION 2: There are two solutions for this error. The first thing to look for is, what type of USB hub(s) is used between the computer and the scanner.
1. If the scanner is connected to a hub, disconnect the scanner and connect it directly to the computers USB port to verify functionality.
2. Verify that the scanner is not connected to any of the following USB hubs:
a. ADS Technologies
b. UH-144 (model number)
c. UT-USB 144 (model number)
If the scanner works after disconnecting from a hub, suggest that they may want to try another type of hub.
The Unixtar UT-USB41UUSB41 hub was tested without problems.
NOTE: If a customer is using any of the hubs listed, as support agents we never recommend any hardware or software to a customer.
As support agents, we can suggest hardware or software for a customer to use that we have tested without problems.
ISSUE 3: The customer receives the scanner back from service and when attempting to scan, an "Undefined Program Error 2117 " occurs.
SOLUTION 3: The HP ScanJet 3300C scanner ships with HP PrecisionScan LT 3.0c.
Once the customer runs the patch, the version of the hp3300t.dll will be version 6.8.99.0

call the 900-555-0012 and the tech support center will give you a service code and reverse the phones charges and have it serviced. If they give you a new one I don't know, that is up to the service center to decide. The charges will be reversed since it's a hardware issue.
