crashed and can't reinstall modem, can't find COM4

I recently had a crash and had to re-format and re-install Win98. My Modem now does not respond. It tells me it can not find COM4, which the diagnostics program tells me that is the port it is using.
 I have a PC-TEL HSP K56 FLEX-PNP D/F/V MODEM        Please help.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Within Windows' hardware-profile,
delete all the COM ports (COM1/COM2/COM3/COM4/...) and delete all modems. Reboot, and let Windows "find new hardware".

Oops, if you have a serial-port mouse on COM1, then do not delete the COM1 port; if you have a PS/2-port or USB-port mouse, then delete COM1.
Otta's advise should fix it but don't worry about the mouse, Windows would give that right back if its on the legacy port             Mrbreeze
No wait, Device Manager won't show the ports after Com2 but delete 1&2 and the modem, and it should all be found by Windows                  Mrbreeze
I would start from scratch.
Delete the modem, delete the com ports and if you have a ps2 mouse and don't use your serial ports go into your Bios and disable com a and b or it may list them as 1 and 2. Windows will still assign them when it boots. Then reinstall your modem
Good Luck
