window maker changing user - keeping my settings

if i login i can go ctrl+F2 to make another login screen but this does not work if i am running window maker

question 1 is this usual

question 2 can i keep my window maker desktop without running window maker when i login and if so haw do ii deactivate it but keep my nice desktop?

yes, it's usual.
 
use ALT+CTRL+F2 to get a login screen and ALT+F7 to go back to X-windows

To start without X-windows type linux 3
when asked by lilo insted of just linux OR edit your /etc/inittab file. Change your 5 into a 3 (it's in something like ../3/initdefault/5 and one of the first lines)
