graphic design programs

I am starting a software gaming business which is an offshoot of my dot.com publishing business. I want to design game graphics on my PC which is my main computer. I have started noticing more and more designers using PCs this year (though Macs still have the edge). Is Adobe the best in the PC designing world the same as it is in the Mac world?

It depends on how you'll create your graphics: pixel-based, vector-based or 3D models.

Adobe Photoshop certainly is the industry standard for editing pixel-based images, and it is by far the best photo-editing tool I've ever used, both on Macintosh and on Windows platforms. So if you're creating graphics from scanned images, Adobe Photoshop is the best program you could get.

But if you wish to create 3D graphics, I guess 3D Studio Max is the best program on the Windows platform, and Infini-D is the best program on the Macintosh platform. 3D Studio Max is being widely used in the game development industry, and it is a flexible and extensible tool.

And if you're going to create vector-based graphics (based on shapes instead of pixels), I would suggest CorelDRAW or Adobe Illustrator. Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard on the Macintosh platform, and its Windows version is very good as well. But personally, I find CorelDRAW easier to use.

In the end, selecting the best graphics program is largely a matter of opinion, but it's pretty safe to say that you can't go wrong with Adobe's suite of graphics applications.
