Dear xxx,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Connect.  Further to your enquiry please
find attached full details, which I hope you will find to be useful and
informative to your enquiries.

Yes, you could install of Windows 2000 without having to install Windows 98
first.  However, when you install the Window 2000, the computer will ask you
to insert a qualifying product CD ex, Win98 SE CD and to verify.

If you would like any additional information, please do not hesitate to

Subject:      Upgrade to Windows 2000

I would like to know, that if I purchase an Windows 2000 Upgrade CD
(Win95/98/98SE to Windows 2000, the US$219 one) will I be able to perform
clean installs of Windows 2000 without having to install Windows 98 first?
I have a licensed Windows 95, 98 and 98SE CD. If I am installing on an
empty hard disk, will it ask me to insert a qualifying product CD and then
verify and install directly, or will I need to install Windows 98 and then
upgrade that to Windows 2000?

Thanks

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No it won't ask you. Just swap out the 2K cd for the 98 and point the installer to it, let it find it and qualify the upgrade and the swap them out again.

"will I need to install Windows 98 and then upgrade that to Windows 2000?"

No, you do not need to load 98 first.
