reformatting a harddrive from Win 95 to Win 98

I have a second computer which has Windows 95 installed on it.  I want to reformat it to Windows 98 with a recovery disk which came with my new computer.  When I try to install software on the Win 95 computer I get nothing by "illegal operation" messages.  Can I reformat that computer with the recovery disk for Windows 98?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What you can do is format a system floppy (format a: /S) and then copy

mscdex (if present)

from the \windows\command folder, then you can boot from that floppy, and wipe it completely using fdisk and/or format.

I do not know if a W98 recovery disk has these programs, but by making your own, it will work.
