I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Which Web Server you are using?

If you are using IIS, you can install Index Server, which is freely given  with IIS.  Index Server can be configured to your Web site and you can search within the site using a query form which contains a text box &a button.

I can tell you briefly how the search takesplace. In Index server, you can give the directories in which you want to search.  Create a catalog. Right click on the catalog name to get the pop up menu. Give the new directory as the directory which contains all the files in your web site. The Index Server reads the documents in the specified directory, collect the words in it, does filtering, word breaking and normalization to get the key words and keep them in the catalog.

When you are searching from the search form, the search text will be converted into query format and pass it to the index server.  Each query in index server references a particular IDQ file or index file.It search through the catalog to find the matches. Index server builds a results page in HTML and send back to the IIS server, which is to be forwarded to the browser.

Hope I answered your query.
