Need for Speed II SE: Multiplay

I've just been given Need for Speed II SE (Special Edition), and would like to try out multiplay.  I've got the split screen option working OK, but I want to multiplay using modem-to-modem or via the Internet.  Having done a full install on my machine, I see that the "game type" can be changed to "modem", "network", etc, but I tried doing the "Remote" install on a friend's PC but when he starts the game, can clicks "CONNECT" (the option which replaces "RACE" on the full install), he just gets the message "no supported device" (from memory).  This is before dialing.
My questions are:

1. Has anyone got modem-to-modem multiplay to work?  If so, how?  (eg: did the other PC need its own CD or just a "Remote" install, or what)?

2. Has anyone got Internet multiplay to work?  If so, how?  (eg: what "game type" option do you take and did the other PC(s) need their own CD or just a "Remote" install, or what)?

3. Is Need for Speed II SE compatible with any of the other Need for Speeds (eg: Need for Speed II (not SE)), for multiplay?  Any tips to get it working?

Thanks.
