CD ROM Access problems

Having a CD-ROM problem.  If a cd is in the drive when the computer boots, I can access the cd.  If I put a cd into the drive after the computer is already running, the drive cannot find it.  The drive is spinning, and on a rare occasion, it will find the cd, but after a period of time of using the program, if the computer attempts to access the cd again, it can't.  Suggestions?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I immediately thought that this problem might be attributed to a dirty CD-ROM drive.  This is easily repaired by getting a CD-ROM lens cleaner (it usually looks like a CD with a little brush attached to it).

To give you a truly remarkable and almost 100% for sure answer you need to tell us a few things:

a) What computer are you using (try to be system specific ie. Amount of RAM, hard disk size etc.)
b) What type of CD-ROM are you using (speed, make etc.)
c) Have you recently downloaded new drivers for the drive?
d) How old is your system?
e) Is the system still under warrantee?
f) What version of Windows are you using (if you are using Windows at all)?

I hope we can eventually help (but try cleaning it first!)

Kindest Regards,
Gryphon

As Gryphon says above, clean your CD-ROM Drive with a
good quality lens cleaner.  You may have to run it 7 or 8 times
to get the desired result.
