"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This may be what you are looking for... The reason I originally needed to hunt this down was during bulk mailing the machine would stop responding due to the fact that sendmail was creating and working with so many files in the mqueue directory.

First, `cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max` and bump that up to whatever you see fit, perhaps 16000?  You can accomplish this by typing `echo 16000 > /proc/sys/fs/file-max`
