$PHP_AUTH_USER and $PHP_AUTH_PW variables are set by PHP3 module according to client HTTP request. You can't inform WWW-browser that you want to change user/password it sends to you. You can only inform browser that auth data is incorrect, so it will output username/password dialog box again.

 In PHP script you can set/update values of this variables as you want.

$PHP_AUTH_USER = "user";
$PHP_AUTH_PW = "fgjfkg";
