problems with advanced power management W98

I have a Compaq Presario 5640 PII450Mhz.  The PC "hangs" very often when I "wake him up" out of the standby status (advanced power management).  This useful feature of W98 becomes worthless, because I need to turn the power switch in order to reboot...
What to do about this?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I have noticed problems like this before which were caused by the APM on the motherboard conflicting with Windows APM.  Do this:

Restart the system and look for the instruction which will say something like press F2 to enter setup or press delete to enter setup.  Follow that instruction.

Once in CMOS setup, you will be looking for power management which might be found under advanced CMOS setup or chipset features setup.

Once you find the power management setup features, make sure APM ( advanced power management ) is ENABLED but all subcomponents are DISABLED.

You may also get results by disabling power management in your bios, but leaving "PM control by APM" enabled.  I had the same problem with my P3 450, can't remember if it was 1cells method or this one.
