Try this link:

you may try turning off the BIOS virus scanner (just while you are installing of course) it causes problems while setting things up.
It is possible that you have a bad CDROM.  It is also possible that mandrake is having problems with your hardware.  Mandrake is...well, worse than redhat.  It's almost as bad as NT.  Perhaps a copy of Caldera OpenLinux from http://www.cheapbytes.com/ ?

I do have a msg on the install that I do not have a SMP capable motherboard ... is this a prob??
Nope :)  SMP == Symettric Multi-Processing, meaning that the board supports 2 or more CPUs.

I suspect that you've got a defective CD.  Particularly after reading tdchar's link above.

Mandrake is...well...just about as bad as NT.  It's a bear to install, and lots of things tend to be broken.  :(

Alternately, are there any scratches on the CD itself?  Is this the first time the CD has really been used?  Has it ever successfully installed a whole installation of linux onto a machine?
I have e-mailed Macmillan twice to get a replacement CD. So far they have not even replied to either e-mail. I have succesfuly installed Slackware Linux and so far so good.
Cheers,
Thomas
thanks for all the info ... i am taking mandrake back to exchange if possible ... am going to try slackware ...
Good deal.  Good luck with slackware :)
place that i went to didnt have slackware ... so i got redhat 6.1 ... same prob!! ... HELP!?!? ... hangs ... <alt><f4> shows a <4>hdc interrupt lost about every 10 seconds
hdc interrupt lost?  Sounds like your CDROM may be going south...  do you have a spare CDROM drive you can test with?
well ... the cdrom works fine in windows 95 ... could it be some kind of conflict ... soundblaster compatible, 16X, on a packard bell 166mmx with integrated sound card
If you still have windows on the HD, try copying some big files to the hard drive from the CD--like 60-90 MB, if you can.  If those copy with no error, then there is probably some sort of problem with the install program, and we'll start attacking that angle :)
copy went fine ... ??
damn.  damn.  what the hell?  I'd say it's time to jack up the points to 50 or so, and see if that can attract a big hitter.  I'm about out of ideas on this one.  Sorry, dude!

k ... thanx anyway ... i think ill take your advice
