Performa 6400/200 OS 9 ?

I know it would be a good thing to have the OS 8.5.1 rather the 8.6 on my machine (Performa 6400/200), but would it be a goog idea to have the new OS 9 ???

MacOS 9 and MacOS 8.6 are both not as stable as MacOS 8.5.1. I have installed all of them on many machines. MacOS 9 has more problems than MacOS 8.6. There is an update planned. You should see MacOS 9.0.1 or some such soon.

When installing a new MacOS, always use the "Universal" or "Runs on Any Macintosh" feature. This will insure that the installer creates the System File and the Finder File properly. Installers are stupid. The draw back to this is that you get a plethora of Extensions (inits) and Control Panels (cdevs) that do not apply to your machine. It's a Trade off.

If you are interested in knowing what inits and cdevs are required for your machine, run the installer twice. Once for "This Macintosh Only" and again "For Any Macintosh. You can insure that the installer will not over-write the previous System Folder by moving the System File into another folder, System Folder Items Disabled for example, and renaming the System Folder.

In conclusion, MacOS 9 is a pain in the ass. It is not ready for prime time. If you choose MacOS 8.6 be sure to get the Font Manager Update 1.0.
