java compiler on linux

We just installed linux on our PC. When I try to run
javac or java, I find that it is not installed on our machine.
Can anybody tell me how to get this into our PC?
We installed linux from a CD.

What version of Linux did you install?  Also is your java using swing components?  Also try typing "whereis java" just to be sure it is not on your system.

Due to licencing restrictions the java official sun java sdk cant be distributed with linux. But you can go get it and install it yourself if you go to the link below:

http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/earlyAccess/j2sdk122/

You'll have to register (It's free). Then download it. It's pretty big for a modem download (21Mb). Hope this helps> If you have any problems, please leave a comment.

PS - In case you're interested, after you download the sdk, you can get Borland JBuilder, from the address below, for free. They opensourced it.

Don't know how I forgot to mention this, but you can get the java 1.2 sdk from http://www.blackdown.org . The link above is for the new java2 sdk. Have fun.
