try to reset the password.
if you're using lilo to boot into linux.

when in lilo prompt :

ex :

LILO :
type linux -s or anything you're called for linux
boot partition

example :
i have linux installed in /dev/hda2 and i called it
blinux

in LILO :
type blinux -s

then it will booting in single user mode
without password.

and you can set root password

by typing passwd root after the command prompt displayed (#)

reboot.

next time you can login using user name :
root
password : --> the password you're set before

It didn't ask for a root password?  This is odd.  You should have been prompted for a password, but not a username.  root is the username.
