HP Laserjet 5L error

In trying to use my HP Laserjet 5L printer on a SONY laptop using Win95, I got this error message:

"An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C10655F2 in VxD VJOYDC01) + 00000586.  This was called from 0028:C10655F2 in VxD VJOYDC01) + 00000586.  It may be possible to continue normally."

The installation appeared normal until I tried to print something.  Then the light flashed for a moment and I got the above message.  It seems as though it's trying to tell me that there is a problem with the parallel cable but that cable works fine on my desktop computer.  I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cable several times and also tried rebooting the computer several times.  I even tried reinstalling the printer software.  Nothing helps.  Any ideas?

Try setting the parallel port to plain old standard parallel port in the BIOS on your system.  Then, there are two different drivers for that printer.  Try the PCL drivers instead of the standard drivers.
