Edited text of question.
Well you ve plenty of choice...
Oracle, IBM DB2, ADABAS D, Empress, Sybase adaptive enterprise server, and I think now Informix has announced support for linux for commercial products (you can get more info on the company s website).
Else you ve free products like postgres which derives from Ingres, or mySQL which doesn t implement SQL fully but is said to be fast.
There s an oracle db howto (, a postgres howto ( and if you speak french (maybe there s an english version, but don t know where) there s a db howto (postgres oriented, but with a chapter on other db) at

Well I have been using mySql  It is fast and great for interfacing with PHP/PERL.  It is more or less free and I recommend it for Web related database needs.
