Well you ve plenty of choice...
Oracle, IBM DB2, ADABAS D, Empress, Sybase adaptive enterprise server, and I think now Informix has announced support for linux for commercial products (you can get more info on the company s website).
Else you ve free products like postgres which derives from Ingres, or mySQL which doesn t implement SQL fully but is said to be fast.
There s an oracle db howto (http://www.linux.com/howto/Oracle-HOWTO.html), a postgres howto (http://www.linux.com/howto/PostgreSQL-HOWTO.html) and if you speak french (maybe there s an english version, but don t know where) there s a db howto (postgres oriented, but with a chapter on other db) at http://www.freenix.org/unix/linux/HOWTO/Database-HOWTO.html
Also you can find pointers to db http://linas.org/linux/db.html.
Also I remember an issue of linux journal on db (http://www.linuxjournal.com/)

Well I have been using mySql http://www.mysql.com.  It is fast and great for interfacing with PHP/PERL.  It is more or less free and I recommend it for Web related database needs.

All documentation can be found at www.myswql.com.
