Modem driver update

I have a gateway G6-350 PII with a U.S. Robotics 56K Voice for Windows (Winmodem)Modem. I obtained an updated V.90 driver from the gateway site and  as per the instructions went to the DEVICE MANAGER/MODEM/PORT SETTINGS and uninstalled the modem via the UNINSTALL button. When I restart my computer Windows detects the modem and installs the old drivers without giving me the option of selecting which drivers I want to use. How can I make Windows let me choose the drivers I want to use?

1. Place the new drivers on a clean, formatted floppy. Expand or unzip them first if need be.

2. Boot the PC into safemode by restarting the computer and right after the memory post and before you see windows starting, tap the F8 key. Now select Safemode. It will take some time to load, so be patient and accept the notice when it comes up.

3. Now go into control panel, click on the System icon and choose the device manager tab. Scroll down to the modems section and click the + to expand. Highlight and remove any modems you find, and there may be multiple entries. Now close device manager and reboot the system. When windows finds the modem and tries to install it, cancel it. If Windows installs a modem, just go to the next step.

4. Now go into control panel and click the modem icon. Remove the modem that may have been installed in #3 above.

5. Now add a new modem and then use the floppy disk for the drive "Have disk".
Good morning.  One other STRANGE thing that I wanted to add which occurred on my USR 33.6 Voice Modem when I first upgraded it; and installed the 3com software package.  In normal mode, the headphone and microphone I plugged into the slots of the voice modem of course required a wave-modem driver and just yesterday when  I was in SAFE MODE, found like THREE line items for that wave device in the multimedia view.  REally odd.  Don't know if this was a product of the installation processes when the modem initially was installed with hard-coded assignments; the RapidComm Voice software installation or one of many Windows 98 problems along the way.

This, just in case you also find multiple strange entries for the wave support of the voice modem of USR.

If it’s a _ISA-modem_, you might have to uninstall the modemfiles manually. If you have a win98-cdrom try to run the wmregdel.exe as in 2.

1.
In the explorer go to windows/inf.
Be sure the alternative "show all files" are marked.
If you got the catalogue named "other" delete it.
Look for
 Winmodem.inf
 Wmmodem.inf
 Wmport.inf
 Wmwave.in
 Oem*.inf
 Drvdata.bin
 Drvidx.bin
and delete them.

Go to windows/system and look for
 turbovbf.vxd
 turbovcd.vxd
 winmodem.vxd
delete them as well.

Start regedit. (Make sure you have a register-backup.)
Use the find function (ctrl+f)
Look for "usr"
Delete when it stops and press F3 for search again until it doesn't find anymore.

Another search for "winmodem" and delete everything.

When you restart the system it will find the modem and NOT the inf-files so you must insert the driverdisk and show the path.

2.
Another (more easy way is to run the wmregdel.exe from windows98 cdrom
[CD-ROM]:\DRIVERS\MODEM\3COM-USR\WINMODEM
Sometimes you have to run the wmregdel.exe a couple of times.
Restart and name the path to the inf-file.
Dexter,
Glad to see the problem is solved. Let us know if we can help again.

Dew I followed your advice but Windows still installed the old drivers
Dexter,
Do you have the drivers you wanted installed or you still got the old ones.
                      Mrbreeze
Dexter, didn't you click "Have Disk" and point the installer to the floppy where the new drivers were?
Mrbreeze I have the new ones
Dew..every time I removed the modem from the device manager and restarted my computer it auto installed the modem and old drivers. When I removed the modem and went to the control panel to intall the modem it would find the modem and auto install the old drivers without giving me any options before doing so
Dexter,
Glad to hear that hope they are working better for you.
Is it just me or did the format of this page just change?
                           Mrbreeze

Mbreeze, his modem is still not right!

And yes, this site just updated to the new format.
Dennis,
When you uncheck the box to be notified does it send a blank comment? Sometimes my eyes play tricks on me but that was bad. Also I can only send about every other time and get an error the others so I guess they got some bugs to work out. Maybe they ought to ask the experts for help huh?

Mrbreeze,

<<When you uncheck the box to be notified does it send a blank comment?>>

It shouldn't be. It doesn't to me.

<<Sometimes my eyes play tricks on me but that was bad.>>

I can't find anything in the MSKB on either eyes, play or tricks. ;o)

<<Also I can only send about every other time and get an error the others so I guess they got some bugs to work out.>>

What kind of error. It's been working fine most of the evening!
