Display drivers
I'm running a Compaq Presario 5240/Win 98. The graphicks are handled by ATI Rage LT PRO agp 2x. I recently updated the driver for this. Current version is:
4.11.2560
Date is: 5-21-1999
This has been working fine for some days now, but yesterday when I tried to connect to the net, the screen went all blue and I got this message:
DPAL error. Attempt to copy past DMA buffer in file .\b2dmaisr.c at line 74
...Press any key to continue.
So I did, and got the same message, except the "line" was now 69. Eventually I had to do a ctrl+alt+del.
This happened repetedly, also when I tried to use Power Point 2000. Any ideas?

It's working fine now (or I wouldn't be able to write this!) I was also able to run Power point at the same time, and I haven't done anything! Just a glitch?
grykris, does this PC have a Diamond winmodem in it?
Just for kicks, boot the system into safemode, go into device manager and go through each area and look for duplicate devices. If there are any, remove them all and then reboot.

Dennis may have a point there. Also recall these error messages as being related to a Diamond In Controls SW issue or a Diamond Modem issue .... recall the problem being due to some Diamond modems conflict with the pnp bios on some motherboards. Plus, this is just an excerpt of a friend's email which may be related also. Just guessing here... DPAL.VXD? Thats a modem driver, I believe. Tried the SAFE MODE delete all and reinstalling your modem. (remove it from the Control Panel/System dialog and reboot windows).
Anyway, not looking for points on this, just adding a couple of possibilities or expansions on what has already been posted. Interested in the outcome.

I do have a Diamond Supra Express 56i PRO modem. Did what you said, and found 4(!) monitors listed in device manager. How did they get there?? Anyway, removed all but the one I'm using.
ASKER
Also, do you want me to remove my modem in safe mode to have windows detect it again?
Actually, go in and remove the modem and the monitor that way and redetect both. If it makes you feel more comfortable, do one at a time.
ASKER
Will do that. I forgot yo mention one thing In device manager, I found the entry "IRQ-Holder for PCI-Steering" listed 6(!)times. Is this whatit should be?
To be certain that I don't do it wrong:
Safe mode>Device manager>Highlight modem>click remove>ok and then restart, right?

Seeing multiples in the IRQ holder is normal.
As for your last part, you got it right on the nose!

remove all the pci steerings too, those get duplicated when conflicts. I had six, now i have 2.
ASKER
Will try that. Can I remove all in one operation?
The reinstall of the monitor was succesful. When Windows was detecting the modem, I got this error message:
"Error during filecopying" I press "OK" on this and it disappeared. The modem was found and everything seems fine though?

Yes, in one fell swoop, do 'em all. I trust the DPAL error is now gone?
ASKER
Yes, but just when I was on the Internet 1/2 hour ago there was a breakdown in the electricity in my house for just one second and my PC and monitor restarted. When it had restarted and I was about to connect to the Net again, I got the same DPAL error. Shut down the PC, waited 20 minutes, and now everything seems OK. Will get back to you when I have reinstalled the IRQ's
Okay, I'll wait on you! PS: You need a standby power supply!
Don't you just love these computers of ours? Off to beat my problem one up some more.

Oops, hit submit too soon. What are you talking about, reinstalling IRQs?
STOP; please .... advise.
Start
run
msinfo32
IRQs ....what's shown?
Or should I go back and re read?

In safemode I can now see 4 IRQ's
In Windows none of them shows.
In msinfo32 I see these listings sharing IRQ 11:
supra express 56i pro
supra express 56i pro modem enumerator
rage lt pro agp 2x
irq holder for pci steering

Remember that in Safemode, no drivers are loading other than basics.
The items listed in MSINFO appear fine.
How does the system run is what is important. Is the error now gone?

I hit submit too soon. When windows was redetecting the IRQ- holders for PCI-steering, a sign came up telling me that the screen resolution settings was not compatible with the card (Or Monitor, I don't remember wich) I just pressed ok twice without changing anything and windows started up as usual. The setting are: 1152x864,thousands of colours.
If some of the descriptions doesn't sound familiar, I must point out that my Win98 is in Norwegian and so am I.

On a prior comment you stated "I do have a Diamond Supra Express 56i PRO modem. Did what you said, and found 4(!) monitors listed in device manager. How did they get there?? Anyway, removed all but the one I'm using" ....
I've had that before and would urge you to see again in SAFE MODE if only the correct monitor is listed. This, because each time I have found erroneous entries (duplicates or more) in SAFE MODE, REMOVING ALL OCCURRENCES WAS IMPORTANT. Found problems like that resurface again if not all removed. Wish I understood it, but don't.
Just wanted to add that observation. Also find that resolution settings for us have proven most stable at 800X600X32 or 800X600X24 with our environment, drivers 196MB RAM, 4 MB Vram.

Just checked, and I have only 1 monitor listed. As for the settings, I'll keep that in mind, thank you!
So can we presume that this issue has been resolved?
