Networking PCs and Macs with Unix server

We need to network a couple of Macs(MacOS 7.6) and PCs(Win 3.1) to printers, etc in a LAN. We already have a SPARC Unix machine lying about which doesn't get used. Can we use this as a server? If so, is this the best/cheapest way to go about it (i.e. would it be better to get a Mac or PC as a server)?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Keep in mind that most servers on the internet are Unix and usually Sun based. So yes its certainly possible. Is it worth it as far as time and money? Mmmm maybe. You could certainly ask a unix admin to set it up for you and it would work fine for a good long time but, maintenance is expensive, and time consuming and its not especially intuitive. My suggestion would be to find a 2nd hand mac...7200 or so...Something PPC. I suggest a mac for several reasons: 1) Theyre secure on the internet as they dont have a command line like windows and unix, 2) They will see and keep all data forks from windows and unix while windows and unix wont see and keep mac data forks. 3) its bonehead easy to set up 4) maintenance costs are minimal as you dont have to hire a MCSE or Unix admin.

Of course if youre feeling adventurous go for the Sun. It could be a fun server.
